Comcast enhances broadband with new speeds, more apps: Philadelphia-based Comcast Corp. Tuesday said it is upgrading its two residential broadband Internet tiers as it prepares to introduce a full suite of new online services and products throughout 2005. Comcast's current 3 megabits per second downstream, 265 kilobits per second upstream service will be upgraded to 4 megabits per second downstream and 384 kilobits per second upstream. Its 4 megabits per second downstream, 384 kilobits per second upstream service will jump to 6 megabits per second downstream and 768 kilobits per second upstream. The speed increases will be automatic, which means customers are not required to download any special files or upgrade their connections. The speed upgrades are targeted to be complete by the end of March. Comcast last boosted its speeds in late 2003, when it doubled its downstream speed from 1.5 megabits per second to 3 megabits per second for all customers at no additional charge. Comcast also said it would be adding a number of new products for its customers. The company provided few details, but said that its "roadmap includes the infusion of video into many new and existing applications, including video instant messaging" and the expansion of its online music channel. They have already upped the speed in my area - I had to get the modem replaced a few weeks ago and almost had considered paying the extra $10 to get the bump up to 4 when it was 3 - then they installed the new modem and I got 4 automatically.

now I am considering if $10 more is worth the 6 [img]wink.gif[/img]
